Supervising Safely

Supervising Safely is a three day course that aims to provide supervisors with the relevant knowledge and skills required to ensure they are supervising safely.

 

Supervising Safely Course Programme

 

Day 1

Module 1 The Supervisors Role

Including:

  • The supervisors role in managing health and safety
  • How supervisors provide support to directors and managers
  • The supervisors need to understand policies and procedures
  • The supervisors role in job training
  • The legal requirements and statutory health and safety responsibilities of supervisors
  • The skills and knowledge required to be a supervisor
  • What is required to supervise in a safety critical role
  • How supervisors can promote a positive safety culture
  • How a supervisor can influence behaviour in the workforce
  • The concept of a 'no-blame' culture

Module 2 Hazards, Risks and Control

Including:

  • What hazards and risks are
  • How to identify what the problems are
  • How hazards and risks can be controlled
  • How supervisors need to be aware of the processes in the workplace
  • The importance of talking to people involved in workplace processes to gain knowledge of hazards and risks
  • How to record information from checklists and inspection routines
  • How to examine existing control measures
  • How the findings of risk assessment might be recorded

Day 2

Module 3 Improving Safety

including:

  • Who a supervisor trains
  • What type of training is required and when
  • How a supervisor encourages a workforce to be actively involved in training
  • The supervisors role when informing workers about health and safety considerations in new processes or procedures
  • The need for awareness of legislative guidelines
  • The need for supervisors to be competent when training
  • The training, mentoring and discipline of employees from a supervisors perspective
  • The statutory requirements for reporting accident, incidents and near misses
  • The role of supervisors in conducting accident investigations

Module 4 Communication

Including:

  • How a supervisor communicates between management and the workforce
  • The requirement for managers and supervisors to consult employees on health and safety related matters
  • The requirement for supervisors to communicate and co-ordinate emergency procedures
  • First aid facilities and how to deal with emergency evacuations and threats
  • How supervisors can communicate a safety message to others not employed by their employer
  • The legal obligation of those sharing a workplace to exchange information about risks and decide how to eliminate and control them

Day 3

Module 5 Environment Awareness

Including:

  • What the supervisors role is in reducing and controlling pollution and waste
  • Ways in which individuals can minimise pollution and waste
  • An example of an environmental checklist
  • A look at processes and procedures related to the environment
  • A discussion on 'duty of care' and what is included in the phrase 'special and controlled waste'
